Scott Galvin's Promise

I've always thought that an elected official like a congressman should be a representative.  While some might say that this is exactly what they do, I think there is a nuance to the concept that is overlooked.

What congressmen should be doing is trying their best to vote on bills in the interests of who they represent and in the interest of the country as a whole.  Their own position on an issue should come third. They should never allow what they personally think to override the first two.

What I think most of them do is to vote on bills based on getting re-elected.  Voters don't pay attention to everything.  Many things easily fall under the radar.  And in those cases, I think that congressmen are inclined to do what will suit them personally.  Only in cases where an issue is active in the public's mind do they worry about their constitutients.

Even in some cases, they may go against the constitutients if they are not up for election for some time.  Voters mostly have short memories.  Only in cases like health care and the bailouts does the way a person voted resonate all the way to the polls.

In comes Scott Galvin.  He is running for Florida's 17th District which is in or around Miami.

I seem to have landed on Scott's email list.

This isn't my district.  I should just unsubscribe.  But, what the heck, I like to see how these guys communicate and market themselves.

I got this email today from Scott.

Responding to Every Issue has Always Been Important to Me
Now that I'm Running for Congress, I'll Make this Personal Guarantee:

It's your office.

Every phone call, letter, and email will get returned.

Every time.

If you want to speak to me, you will.

Guaranteed.

Democratic Primary, Vote August 24th.

On the surface, I'm impressed with Scott's concept here.  If I was an optimist, I would say that Scott "gets it".  However, think about this for a minute.  Every congressman represents around 600,000 people.  In my estimation, Scott if promising the impossible. There is no way he pulls this off unless that is all he intends to do in office.  Scott is either naive, overly optimistic or just saying what he thinks voters and donors want to hear.  None of these are good things.

I hope Scott reads this.  If you know him, please pass on the link.  I'd be interested in knowing how he plans to pull this off.
